What is a pops & bangs map?

Crackles on the overrun, done properly

A pops and bangs (or burble) map changes what the engine does when you lift off the throttle. Instead of cutting fuel completely, the map lets a small amount of fuel burn in the hot exhaust, which gives the crackles and bangs you hear on the overrun. On most turbo petrol cars we add it to a Stage 1 or Stage 2 remap, so you get the extra power and the sound in one visit.

Not every car is a good candidate. Diesels and some petrol engines don’t suit it, and on a car with a standard catalytic converter we keep the effect mild to protect the cat. We’ll tell you what to expect on your car before you book.

The process

How we add pops & bangs

01

Health check

We scan for fault codes and check the exhaust and cat are in good order before we change anything.

02

Baseline run

Your car goes on our 4WD dyno for a baseline power and torque run.

03

Map and set the burble

We write the overrun map with your remap and agree how mild or loud you want it, then refine it on the dyno.

04

Before and after

A final run proves the power gains, and you hear the result before you drive away.

Why the dyno matters

Set up on the dyno, not copied from a file

Off-the-shelf burble files often run the overrun fuelling and timing too hard, which can overheat a catalytic converter or stress the turbo. We map the overrun on our Dyno Dynamics DS450 4WD dyno with live datalogging, so exhaust temperatures and fuelling stay in a safe range. If you change your mind later, the effect can be reduced or removed by re-mapping.

Pops & bangs is added to a Stage 1 or Stage 2 remap. Ask us for the add-on price for your car when you get in touch.

Is my car suitable?

Will it suit my car?

Pops and bangs suit most modern turbocharged petrol cars, especially hot hatches such as the Golf GTI and R, Audi S3, Focus ST and BMW M135i/M140i. Results depend on the exhaust: a sports exhaust is louder than a standard one. We recommend keeping a catalytic converter on any car used on the road, and we’ll keep the map mild if you do.

Had some work carried out with pulse at the start of the year. Can’t fault anything that was done, spoke about everything in great detail and their workmanship is spot on. I personally wouldn’t go anywhere else now, always on the end of the phone to help with anything they can. Can’t wait to take my car back for upgrades!

Recently imported an R34 GTR from Japan and got in touch with Pulse Motorsport to carry out a full inspection and service. These guys went above and beyond... arranging transport for the vehicle, keeping me updated with progress photos and showing great attention to detail throughout. They spotted and fixed a few issues that could’ve become problematic if left unchecked. Excellent service, reasonably priced and highly recommended ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Pops & bangs is an add-on to a Stage 1 (£360 inc. VAT) or Stage 2 (£540 inc. VAT) remap. Ask us for the add-on price for your car.

An aggressive overrun map can overheat the catalytic converter and add stress to the turbo and exhaust. We map it on the dyno with datalogging and keep it within safe limits, and milder on cars with a standard cat.

The burble itself is not an MOT test item, but the MOT does check exhaust emissions and that the exhaust isn’t excessively loud. With a working catalytic converter and a road-legal exhaust, a sensibly mapped car should pass.

There is no law against a burble map, but excessive exhaust noise on the road can lead to a fine, and some areas now use noise cameras. That’s why we agree the volume with you and keep road cars sensible.

No. Overrun crackles are a petrol-engine effect, and we don’t add them to diesels.

Yes. A remap, including a pops & bangs map, is a modification and you should tell your insurer.
