Gearbox / TCU remapping

DSG & Gearbox Remapping

A gearbox (TCU) remap for DSG and automatic gearboxes, written to match your engine remap: torque limits raised to suit the extra power, and shift timing and response set up for how you drive. Checked on our Dyno Dynamics DS450 4WD dyno.

What is a gearbox remap?

Let the gearbox keep up with the engine

Modern dual-clutch and automatic gearboxes have their own control unit (TCU) with its own torque limits and shift strategy. After a Stage 2 or bigger engine remap, a standard TCU can limit torque, slip the clutches or shift at the wrong time. A gearbox remap raises the limits to suit your engine, and can sharpen shift speed, change shift points and improve throttle response in manual mode, depending on the gearbox.

We work on common gearboxes including VW Group DSG units and the ZF 8-speed automatic used by BMW and others. Send us your reg and we’ll confirm what’s possible on yours.

The process

How we remap your gearbox

01

Health check

We check fluid condition, fault codes and clutch adaptation values before we change anything.

02

Read and plan

We read your TCU and plan the changes to match your engine map and power.

03

Custom calibration

We set torque limits, shift timing and response for your car and how you drive it.

04

Test under load

We check the changes on our 4WD dyno and on the road, then share the results.

Why the dyno matters

Engine and gearbox, mapped together

The best results come when the engine and gearbox are mapped as one job. Because our Dyno Dynamics DS450 drives all four wheels, all-wheel-drive DSG cars such as the Golf R and Audi S3 can be tested under real load, so we can check that torque is delivered cleanly through the gearbox, not just on paper.

A gearbox remap is usually done with a Stage 2 or Stage 3 engine remap. Ask us for a price for your gearbox when you get in touch.

Is my car suitable?

Is a gearbox remap right for my car?

If your car is mapped to Stage 2 or beyond, or the gearbox is already limiting torque, a TCU remap is usually worth it. On a standard or Stage 1 car it’s often optional, and we’ll tell you honestly if you don’t need it.

Had some work carried out with pulse at the start of the year. Can’t fault anything that was done, spoke about everything in great detail and their workmanship is spot on. I personally wouldn’t go anywhere else now, always on the end of the phone to help with anything they can. Can’t wait to take my car back for upgrades!

Recently imported an R34 GTR from Japan and got in touch with Pulse Motorsport to carry out a full inspection and service. These guys went above and beyond... arranging transport for the vehicle, keeping me updated with progress photos and showing great attention to detail throughout. They spotted and fixed a few issues that could’ve become problematic if left unchecked. Excellent service, reasonably priced and highly recommended ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Often, yes. Many DSG and automatic gearboxes have torque limits that a Stage 2 engine map exceeds, which can cause slipping or limp mode. A TCU remap raises the limits to suit.

Common VW Group DSG gearboxes and the ZF 8-speed automatic, among others. Send us your reg and we’ll confirm what’s possible on your car.

More torque always adds load. We set the limits to suit your engine power, not higher, and check clutch adaptation values first so we can flag any wear before we start.

Yes. We keep a copy of your original gearbox software and can put it back.

Yes. A gearbox remap is a modification, and you should tell your insurer.
