What is a speed limiter?

Removing a factory limit, legally

Many cars leave the factory with a top-speed limit set in the engine software, often around 155mph on performance cars and lower on some hot hatches and diesels. Removing or raising that limit is a software change made in the ECU, and it is usually done alongside a remap.

It’s legal to remove a manufacturer’s top-speed limiter on a car. UK speed limits still apply on the road, so this is for track and circuit use. We don’t alter limiters that are a legal requirement, such as those on goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, and we only change a fleet-set limiter with the vehicle owner’s written permission.

The process

How it works

01

Health check

We scan for fault codes and check the car before we change any software.

02

Read the ECU

We read and back up your original software.

03

Remove or adjust

We remove the limiter or set it to a new value, on its own or as part of your remap.

04

Check and hand over

We check everything is working correctly and keep a copy of your original file.

Why the dyno matters

Best done with a remap

If you’re already having a Stage 1 or Stage 2 remap, the limiter can be changed in the same visit. Every remap is proven on our Dyno Dynamics DS450 4WD dyno, so you get a before-and-after power graph too. Heading to a track day? See our Bedford Autodrome track day checklist.

Is my car suitable?

Can my car's limiter be removed?

Most modern cars with a software limiter can have it removed or adjusted, including many VW Group, BMW, Mercedes and Ford models. Some cars also limit speed with tyres or gearing, which software can’t change. Send us your reg and we’ll tell you what’s possible.

Had some work carried out with pulse at the start of the year. Can’t fault anything that was done, spoke about everything in great detail and their workmanship is spot on. I personally wouldn’t go anywhere else now, always on the end of the phone to help with anything they can. Can’t wait to take my car back for upgrades!

Recently imported an R34 GTR from Japan and got in touch with Pulse Motorsport to carry out a full inspection and service. These guys went above and beyond... arranging transport for the vehicle, keeping me updated with progress photos and showing great attention to detail throughout. They spotted and fixed a few issues that could’ve become problematic if left unchecked. Excellent service, reasonably priced and highly recommended ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
